Magic vs Cavaliers Picks & Prediction

The Cavaliers were bounced by New York in five games in the first round of last year’s playoffs – and unfortunately, they didn’t do much to quiet their critics throughout this season as Cleveland finished fourth in the East with a record of 48-34 – and similarly to their previous campaign, they were consistently hampered by an underperforming offense.

For a brief moment, however, Cleveland’s critics have very little to say, as the Cavaliers kicked off this series with a commanding 97-83 home win over Orlando in Game 1 on Saturday afternoon – smothering the Magic’s offense to 33% from the field and 22% from three-point range in the victory.

Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley combined for 46 points and knocked down 5-of-12 three-point attempts in Saturday’s win for the Cavs. However, they didn’t have much going on offense outside of that, highlighted by the rest of Cleveland’s players scoring just 51 points on 39% from the field and 17% from three-point range in Game 1.

Fortunately for Cleveland in this series though, the Magic’s offense isn’t exactly due to improve by leaps and bounds anytime soon. Orlando ranks 24th in points scored per game and 24th in offensive rating – and they rank 25th in pace.

However, their defense is usually good enough to keep them afloat, considering the Magic rank 4th in points allowed and 2nd in defensive rating on the season – and for a little while, it looked like they might sneak away with Game 1, highlighted by Orlando cutting down Cleveland’s lead to four points with 4:24 left in the third quarter of Saturday’s contest, before eventually getting outmuscled by the Cavs’ offense in the final stanza.

In a matchup between a pair of elite defensive teams that cannot be trusted at the offensive end of the floor, offense is going to be the X-factor throughout this series – and in Game 1, the Cavs stars hit big shots when they needed them most. But if we rewind the clock a few weeks, the Magic were the far better offensive team late in the regular season, and Cleveland’s scoring struggles were on full display yet again in Saturday’s series opener, yet they were fortunate enough to get bailed out by a red-hot Donovan Mitchell.

The oddsmakers can’t set a total low enough for this matchup. Game 1 of this series rang in at 180 total points – and quite frankly, I believe Cleveland’s offense may be due for some regression in Game 2. Will it be enough for Orlando to cover the spread, though? Not if the Magic shoot like they did last game. Take the under and enjoy the rock fight.
