Mavericks vs Clippers Picks & Prediction

The Clippers closed the regular season with a frustrating 17-16 skid, while ranking 15th in offensive rating and 23rd in defensive rating during that stretch. So the forecast for this series was originally very dull with Kawhi Leonard listed as questionable for Game 1 and no official timetable for return. 

While on the other side of that same coin, the Mavericks were a hot commodity after closing their regular season campaign with an impressive 16-4 run, while leading the entire NBA in defensive rating during that span, which had been the Kryptonite of this Dallas team all year (ranked 18th in DefRtg on the season).

However, like a opossum playing dead in the middle of the street, the Clippers immediately flipped a switch and kicked it into high gear in their first playoff matchup, as the Clippers erupted for 109 points on 46% from the field and knocked down 18-of-36 three-point attempts (50%) on the way to a commanding 12-point home victory in Game 1 against Dallas.

Now, full disclaimer, I’m not arguing the Clippers are better off without Kawhi Leonard in general. However, Kawhi did return to the LAC lineup in a limited capacity in Games 2 and 3, and it seemed to throw a wrench into the equation for the Clippers on offense, considering they posted offensive ratings of 119.3 and 126.1 on the way to wins in Games 1 and 4 without Leonard, as opposed to ratings of 104.6 and 102.2 in losses in Games 2 and 3 with Leonard in the lineup.

Speaking of Game 4, the most recent meeting between these teams was an epic rollercoaster ride that is tough to draw a meaningful conclusion from. The Clippers jumped out to a 30-point lead in the first half of Sunday’s contest, and then watched that lead slowly slip away all the way to the point where it turned into 1-point advantage for Dallas with 2:15 left in the fourth quarter, only to snatch the lead back from them in the final moments and send the series back to LA tied 2-2.

James Harden and Paul George scored 33 points apiece on a combined 23-of-36 from the floor and 11-of-15 from 3-point range in Game 4. Kyrie Irving scored 40 points on 56% from the field, while Luka Doncic was arguably the fourth-best player on the floor with 29 points on 42% shooting and 1-of-9 from 3-point territory. What are we supposed to take from that?!

Kawhi has already been ruled out for Game 5. For those of you keeping score at home, the Clippers are 2-0 in this series with him, and 0-2 without him. Plus, if you analyze the full body of work in this series, LAC owns a slight edge in both offensive and defense rating through four games, which comes in addition to a favorable shift in homecourt advantage in Wednesday’s matchup. So I’ll roll the dice on the Clippers as short home underdogs in Game 5.
