Mavericks vs Thunder Picks & Prediction

Well, if somebody would have told me prior to this series that PJ Washington was going to score 21.8 points per game on 49% from the field and 51% from 3-point range, I probably would’ve picked the Mavericks to beat OKC in six games or less. But nobody gave me the memo. So instead, I took the Thunder to win in seven (+430) – and despite the sudden (and likely brief) emergence of a big-3 for Dallas, my OKC bet is still in surprisingly good shape with the series knotted up at two games apiece heading into Game 5, and two of the final three matchups set to take place in Oklahoma City.

The Thunder have placed a heavy emphasis on containing Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving throughout this series, and it’s worked for them at varying degrees. Luka has been terrible. He leads the team in field goal attempts (77) by a 10-shot margin through four games, and he’s only shooting 39% from the floor and 31% from 3-point range. Kyrie has had some excellent stretches, but he tends to take what the defense gives him as opposed to forcing the issue, which has turned into somewhat of a Harden-esque alternating Houdini act. He scored 28 points (14 apiece) in the second halves of Games 1 and 3, while shooting an impressive 11-of-20 (55%) from the field and 5-of-7 (71%) from 3-point range in those four quarters of play. But in the other six halves, he’s been surprisingly quiet in the scoring department, averaging just 5.3 points per half (10.6 points per game) aside from two quick sporadic bursts.

On the bright side, however, OKC’s heavy priortization on stopping Kyrie and Luka has resulted in a bunch of wide open looks for PJ Washington throughout this series, especially from beyond the arc, and Washington has been more than willing to keep taking them, which is proving to be a slippery slope for the Thunder, yet a somewhat viable strategy nonetheless.

After averaging only 5.8 long range attempts per game in 29 regular season games for Dallas, Washington jacked up an average of 9.5 attempts from 3-point territory at a 51% clip in the first four games of this series, and while his overall level of efficiency may not be sustainable, his 3-point shot volume has seen a sharp uptick and held steady ever since Dallas made some initial adjustments following Game 1, as portrayed below:

PJ Washington: 3-Point Shooting Stats
(current series)

  • Game 1: 2-3 (66.7%)
  • Game 2: 7-11 (63.6%)
  • Game 3: 5-12 (41.7%)
  • Game 4: 5-11 (45.5%)
  • Total: 19-37 (51.4%)

Scoring points usually isn’t an issue for a Dallas team with the superstar duo of Doncic and Irving at the helm, as the Mavericks earned the five-seed in the West with a record of 50-32 behind an offense that ranked top-10 in both offensive rating (117.6) and points per game (117.9) during the regular season. Defense was a problem from time-to-time though, ranked 20th in points allowed (115.6) and 18th in defensive rating (115.4). But in the postseason, however, Dallas has looked much different. It’s been an oddly balanced attack, as the Mavs ranks 6th in offensive rating (113.9) and 5th in defensive rating (110.9) among the 16 teams that reached the playoffs. So, now the Mavericks feel like a total wild card, and nobody knows what to expect from them on any given night (or quarter, for that matter).

This young Thunder team doesn’t seem to be quite up to the task of putting away Dallas, aside from the starpower of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who’s single-handedly carrying the OKC offense on his back at 31.8 points per game on 48% from the field and 46% from 3-point range in this series, while everybody else in the supporting cast is averaging less than 18 points on a combined 43% from the floor and 34% from 3-point territory through four games.

However, there’s one thing I’m fairly confident in moving forward: PJ Washington is going to keep jacking up a high volume of shots until he cools off in the scoring department – and quite frankly, the Mavs need him to stay hot, given the incredibly spotty production from Luka and Kyrie throughout this series. So, I’ll try to ride the hot hand with Washington by backing him to hit a trio of 3-pointers in Game 5.

Pick: PJ Washington Over 2.5 Made 3-Pointers (-120)
