Mavericks vs Timberwolves Picks & Prediction

Not too long ago, the Timberwolves were kings of the basketball world. In the previous round of the playoffs, Minnesota rallied back from a 3-2 deficit and closed the series with two straight wins to eliminate the defending champs on their home floor in Game 7 – and as a result, the Wolves entered Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals as the odds-on favorites to win the conference at -170. However, in the aftermath of a frustrating home loss in Game 1, it appears the Wolves’ moment on top of the mountain might have been a quick flash in the pan. But I’m still not ready to sell my stock in Minnesota quite yet…

In the Western Semis, Minnesota posed a particularly difficult matchup for a Denver team that runs its offense through Nikola Jokic. When facing Minnesota, playing through the center position oftentimes puts the ball in arm’s length of 4-time Defensive Player of the Year, Rudy Gobert, and while Karl-Anthony Towns isn’t particularly known for lockdown defense, the tag-team of the two down low (plus Naz Reid) is arguably the best defensive frontcourt in basketball – and they did a great job against Jokic all year, as the Wolves posted a perfect 4-0 record against Denver during the regular season, before eventually going on to defeat them in the playoffs.

The Mavericks are a totally different beast though, and one that Minnesota isn’t quite as perfectly suited to hunt, which came to fruition with a home loss for the Wolves in the first matchup of this series. Instead of Gobert and Towns drawing the heliocentric matchup (Minnesota’s strength), the pressure to defend has shifted to the Wolves’ backcourt as they try to contain the Mavs’ superstar duo of guards, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, and it didn’t go so well in Game 1, as the duo combined for 63 points on on 24-of-49 (48.9%) from the field on the way to a 108-105 road win for Dallas in Wednesday’s opener.

The fact of the matter is, the Timberwolves can only go as far as Anthony Edwards carries them offensively. In Game 1, Minnesota did an excellent job of slowing down the pace (94.4) and defending the perimeter against a Dallas team that ranked 2nd in 3-point attempts per game (39.5) during the regular season. The Mavs knocked down only 6-of-25 (24%) long range shooting attempts in Wednesday’s contest, but it was still enough for Dallas to escape with a victory in a game in which the Edwards, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Mike Conley shot a combined 14-of-43 (32.5%) from the field.

The Wolves fell in love with the 3-ball early in the opening matchup of this series, and for a good reason, as they shot 11-of-25 (44%) from downtown in the first half of Game 1 this past Wednesday. But, in the end, it came back around to bite them, as Minnesota jacked up another 24 long range attempts in the second half of Wednesday’s contest, and only made seven of them (29.2%) – which proved to be detrimental for the Wolves, despite Dallas shooting 41.5% from the field and 33.3% from 3-point range in the second half of Game 1.

In Game 2, however, I think we’ll see Minnesota return to its roots with a dominant defensive performance. The Wolves held Denver to less than 100 points in all four of their wins in the previous round, while also scoring 107 points or less in six-of-seven matchups total. On the other side of that same coin, the Mavs continue to play slower than usual, ranked 8th (92.8) among 16 playoff teams in pace, after ranking 6th (100.1) in the entire league during the regular season. I’ll take the under in Game 2.
