NBA: Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Charlotte Hornets Preview, Prediction

The visiting Minnesota Timberwolves (34-29) take on the reeling Charlotte Hornets (14-46) on Wednesday night (7 p.m. ET).

It’ll be a matchup between two of the league’s brightest young guards: Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards (27.4 points) and Charlotte’s LaMelo Ball (26.1 points, 7.0 assists).

The 7th place Timberwolves are just a half game back of the Golden State Warriors for the coveted final secure playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Timberwolves are on a two-game winning streak, most recently topping the Philadelphia 76ers 126-112 on March 4.

This is the second night of a back-to-back for the Timberwolves but the Hornets won’t pose much of a challenge.

MIN @ CHA Odds

The Hornets have lost seven in a row after falling to 119-101 to the Warriors on March 3. Six of the seven losses in this stretch have been by double digits.

The Timberwolves will possibly be without center Rudy Gobert (back) again but will still clamp down the futile Hornets offense. The Timberwolves are sixth in defensive rating (110.6) while the Hornets are 29th in offensive rating (106.2).

Besides Ball, the other defensive priority is to contain Miles Bridges (20.2), who’s averaging over 20 points for the second straight season.

Despite the presence of Edwards and Ball, this will be a methodical game. For pace, the Hornets are 23rd and the Timberwolves are 25th.

Neither team is strong at protecting the ball either, so the turnover battle will be key. The Timberwolves are 20th and the Hornets are 28th in assist/turnover ratio.

The Hornets will struggle to stop the Timberwolves from beyond the arc. The Timberwolves are fifth in the league in 3-point percentage (37.6). Led by Edwards and Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Minnesota has five players shooting at least 38 percent on 3-pointers with 4+ attempts per game.

The Timberwolves are favored by nine points and the total is set for 223.5 points at bet365. For the moneyline, it’s Timberwolves -380 and Hornets +300.

The Timberwolves are 26-19 this season as moneyline favorites. Minnesota will add to that record by covering the spread with a double-digit victory.

PICK: Timberwolves -9
