NBA: New York Knicks vs. Indiana Pacers Preview, Prediction

Two of the top 4 teams in the Eastern Conference meet as the Indiana Pacers (29-22) host the New York Knicks (34-18) on Tuesday night (7:30 p.m. ET). 

This is the final of three regular season matchups between the long-time rivals who met in the second round of the 2024 playoffs. The Knicks knocked off the visiting Pacers 123-98 on Oct. 25. The Pacers evened the series with a 132-121 home victory on Nov. 10. 

The Pacers and Knicks are each 7-3 in their last 10 games. Both teams are coming off losses on Feb. 8. The Pacers lost 124-117 at the Los Angeles Lakers. The visiting Boston Celtics routed the Knicks 131-104.

For the Knicks, Josh Hart (knee) and OG Anunoby (foot) are game-time decisions. Myles Turner (neck) is also a game-time decision for the Pacers. 

This figures to be a high scoring game. The Knicks (119.6) are second and the Pacers (114.3) are 10th in the league in offensive rating. 

For the Knicks, guard Jalen Brunson (26.3) is ninth and center Karl-Anthony Towns (24.0) is 17th in the league in points per game. Meanwhile for the Pacers, point guard Tyrese Haliburton is sixth in assists (8.5) and forward Pascal Siakam (20.7) is 33rd in points. 

Whoever dictates the tempo will win this game. The Pacers play an up-and-down style, ranking 6th in pace (100.68). The Knicks are more methodical at 24th in pace (97.96). 

The Knicks are a more balanced team than the Pacers. New York is also ninth in points allowed (111.8) while allowing the fewest rebounds (41.2) in the league. 

The biggest weakness for the Pacers to exploit is the Knicks’ 3-point defense. New York is last in the NBA in 3-point percentage allowed (38.0). Siakam (41.1 percent) will have ample opportunities beyond the arc. 

The Pacers’ defense is 23rd in field goal percentage (47.3). Towns (53.1 percent) and Brunson (49.0 percent) will have room to operate individually and in tandem. 

The Pacers have been prone to slow starts lately. Indiana has been down 15 or more in its last four games. The Pacers can’t be sluggish against the Knicks, who are riding a three-game road winning streak with a 16-8 mark away from Madison Square Garden.
