NBA: New York Knicks vs. Los Angeles Clippers Preview, Prediction

The Los Angeles Clippers (33-29) host the New York Knicks (40-22) on Friday night (10:30 p.m. ET). 

This is the second night of a back-to-back for the Knicks, who are coming off a 113-109 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Knicks star guard Jalen Brunson sustained an ankle injury in the loss and is likely out for tonight’s game. 

James Harden erupted for 50 points in the Clippers’ most recent outing, a 123-115 victory vs. the Detroit Pistons. It’s the 24th time Harden has scored at least 50 points in his illustrious career.

With Norman Powell (hamstring) still out, expect Harden to continue to assert himself on offense. Having Kawhi Leonard back in the lineup is a major boost too on both ends of the floor. 

The Knicks are fifth in offensive rating (118.2) and points per game scored (117.2) but the likely absence of Brunson is massive. 

Figure on Mikal Bridges to have a bigger offensive role. Bridges took only six shots vs. the Lakers but he’ll be much more aggressive offensively in this game. Karl-Anthony Towns will have his usage rate increase as well. 

However overall the Clippers defense will be tough for the Knicks to score against. The Clippers are fourth in defensive rating (109.7) and points per game allowed (108.9).

Ivica Zubac will create issues on the interior while Kris Dunn and Leonard will apply plenty of pressure on the perimeter. The Knicks offense will get sped up without Brunson and commit more turnovers than they’re accustomed to. 

The Clippers are favored by 7.5 points and the total is set for 218 points at bet365. For the moneyline, it’s +240 Knicks and -300 Clippers. 

The Clippers are 23-10 as moneyline favorites and 9-5 when they’re favored by 7+ points against the spread. The Knicks are 27-33-2 against the spread and 0-2 when cast as a 7+ point underdog. 

With the Knicks on the second game of a back-to-back and down their best perimeter player, the Clippers will be too overwhelming. The Clippers will cover the spread and earn a double-digit victory.
