Nuggets vs Timberwolves Picks & Prediction

You know how it goes in the NBA Playoffs. Once a team goes down 3-0 in a series, you can go ahead and start digging their grave. Teams trailing by three games in a series have never come back to win the round in 155 attempts, and they’ve only forced a Game 7 on four of those occasions. So, are the defending champs going to make this a series, or what?

I’m certainly no stranger to the idea of the Timberwolves posing a bad matchup for a Denver team that usually runs its offense through the center position. Nikola Jokic is Superman for the Nuggets, and the goal is for him to touch the ball on every single possession. But against Minnesota, however, playing through Jokic oftentimes puts the ball in arm’s length of 4-time Defensive Player of the Year, Rudy Gobert – and while Karl-Anthony Towns isn’t particularly known for lockdown defense, he’s still another big body for Minnesota to throw at Jokic defensively, which may not be a perfect solution for every matchup, but it appears to be the MVP’s Kryptonite.

The only way Superman can be defeated though, is by somebody having the power and willingness to take advantage of he Kryptonite in battle, and the villain of this movie is Anthony Edwards. In the first two matchups of this series in Denver, Edwards erupted for 35 points per game on 28-of-46 shooting (60.9%) for the Timberwolves, accounting for roughly 33% of his team’s points in Games 1 and 2 – which was more than enough to lead the T-Wolves to a pair of road wins with their duo of big men holding Jokic well-below his season averages in those two contests at 24 points per game on 16-of-38 (40.5%) from the field and 2-of-10 from 3-point range (20%).

However, make no mistake about it, Nikola Jokic is still Superman, and whenever you think you have him exactly where you want him, that’s when you should be afraid of him throwing on the cape and going to work. He’s the 3-time MVP and the reigning Finals MVP – and we’re talking about a Nuggets team that was listed as +100 favorites to win the Western Conference no less than a week ago, who many people believed would inevitably beat Boston in the Finals. Of course, assuming Minnesota wouldn’t give them too much trouble…

Well, news flash! The Nuggets are officially in trouble. How much trouble are they in? Only time will tell. But, as bad as Denver looked in the first two games of this series, I still think it’s too early to write off the defending champs. I’ve already come to terms with the fact that the world belongs to Anthony Edwards and we’re all just living in it. However, it’s tough to imagine a player as great as Jokic being dethroned in such embarrassing fashion.

Jokic has finally found a worthy counterbalance in Edwards, and based on the way the first two games of this series played out, Edwards may actually have the edge. But even if that’s the case, I still expect the Nuggets to fight back with all their might and leave everything on the floor in Game 3 – which, in the end, may still not be enough to outlast Minnesota in a hostile environment. But at the very least, I think we’ll see Friday’s contest go down to the wire. I’ll take the points with Denver.
