NBA: Sacramento Kings vs. New Orleans Pelicans Preview, Prediction

In a strange scheduling twist, the Sacramento Kings (28-26) take on the host New Orleans Pelicans (12-42) for the third time in five days on Thursday (8 p.m. ET).

The Pelicans swept the Kings in last season’s matchups. However, the Kings have taken all three meetings this season vs. the Pelicans.

The Kings edged the visiting Pelicans 111-109 on Dec. 12. Malik Monk’s block on Dejounte Murray iced the victory.

Then on Feb. 8, the host Kings beat the Pelicans 123-118. The Kings rallied from a 20-point deficit for the comeback win.

This is the second game of a back-to-back as the Kings defeated the Pelicans 119-111 on Feb. 12. Keon Ellis drained 7 3-pointers en route to 27 points and Zach LaVine tallied 20 of his 23 points in the second half.

The Kings are on a two-game winning streak as they push towards claiming a playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Kings (116.5) are eighth in the league in points per game. The Pelicans (119.2) have the No. 27 defense for points per game and will struggle against the Kings’ weapons.

DeMar DeRozan is averaging 22.2 points and 3.7 assists in his last 10 games, so the Pelicans have to be aware of him offensively.  Skilled big Domantas Sabonis (20.4 points, 14.3 rebounds) must be a focal point for the Pelicans’ defense. Also, the recently acquired LaVine is averaging 19.4 points and 4.0 assists in his first five games with the Kings.

Meanwhile, the Pelicans are mired in a 10-game losing streak. The Pelicans haven’t won since a 123-119 overtime victory vs. the Utah Jazz on Jan. 20.

Zion Williamson has been a matchup nightmare for the Kings. Williamson racked up 40 points on 16-for-21 shooting in 28 minutes during the Feb. 8 loss. In the Feb. 12 defeat, Williams went for 33 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and two steals.

Yet, the Kings won’t have to deal with Williamson in this game because he doesn’t play in back-to-backs. That’ll give more offensive opportunities to Trey Murphy III (22.5 points) who is second on the Pelicans in scoring.

The Kings have to be aware of Murphy III in transition, as he’s averaging 4.6 fast break points per game. Overall, the Pelicans are ninth in the league in fast break offense (16.8 points).

The Kings are 8-point favorites and the total is set for 235.5 points at bet365. For the moneyline, it’s Kings -340 and Pelicans +270.

The Kings will repay the Pelicans for last season’s sweep and cover the spread for a second win in as many nights in New Orleans.

PICK: Kings -8.0
