NBA: San Antonio Spurs vs. Atlanta Hawks Preview, Prediction

De’Aaron Fox makes his debut alongside budding franchise cornerstone Victor Wembanyama for the San Antonio Spurs (21-26) on Wednesday night against the host Atlanta Hawks (23-27).

The Sacramento Kings dealt the 27-year-old point guard to the Spurs in a three-team blockbuster trade that netted them two-time All-Star guard Zach LaVine from the Chicago Bulls

Fox was an All-Star in 2023 and led the NBA in steals last season.

The first-time All-Star Wembanyama (24.6 points, 10.9 rebounds, 3.9 blocks) is now flanked at point guard by Fox and future Hall of Famer Chris Paul (8.2 assists, 1.3 steals). Paul (finger) is a game-time decision.

The Spurs are on a two-game losing streak, most recently losing 128-109 at the Memphis Grizzles on Feb. 3. Wembanyama closed with 27 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, two steals, and two blocks.

The Spurs have dropped four of their last five games. The lone victory was a 144-118 rout vs. the Milwaukee Bucks on Jan. 31.

The 7-foot-3 Wembanyama has built on his Rookie of the Year campaign with an even better season. Wembanyama leads the league in blocks, while being eighth in rebounds and 14th in points.

The Spurs are 18th in offensive rating (111.9) and 19th in true shooting percentage (57.0).

The Spurs are 11th in the league in field goal percentage defense (46.2). However, the Spurs are 17th in defensive rating (113.8) and 19th in points allowed (114.0).

Meanwhile, the Hawks picked up a dramatic 132-130 victory at the Detroit Pistons in their last outing on Feb. 3.

Guard Trae Young drained the game-winning fadeaway 3-pointer with 1.6 remaining to snap an eight-game losing streak. Young led the Hawks with 34 points and nine assists. Guard Dyson Daniels stuffed the stat sheet with 19 points, seven assists, four steals, and three blocks.

Now the Hawks are aiming for their first home victory since beating the Phoenix Suns 122-117 on Jan. 14.

Despite not getting an All-Star nod, Young is having a sensational season. The 26-year-old is averaging a double double (23.0 points, 11.5 points) along with 1.3 steals.

Forward De’Andre Hunter is second on the Hawks with 18.9 points. Hawks starting center Clint Capella (back) is out.

The Hawks are eighth in points scored (115.9) but 23rd in offensive rating (110.6). On the other end, the Hawks are 28th in points allowed (119.0) and 16th in defensive rating (113.6).

The Spurs edged the visiting Hawks 133-126 in overtime on Dec. 19. Wembanyama erupted for 42 points (7 3-pointers) and four blocks. Young tallied 23 points and 16 assists in the loss.

The Spurs are 4.5 point favorites and the total is set for 242.5 at bet365. For the moneyline, it’s -180 for the Spurs and +150 for the Hawks.

With the Spurs acclimating their new star guard Fox, the Hawks will fall but cover the spread in a close game.

PICK: Hawks +4.5
