DALLAS MAVERICKS vs. MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES BETTING PREDICTION

Ja Morant finally returns to the lineup for the Grizzlies on Monday night, which comes as a huge sigh of relief after yielding a rather pedestrian record of 5-4 in their last nine games. Even when Morant is active, though, this Memphis’ squad is still one of the toughest to read on a nightly basis, primarily stemming from the fact that they own the third-best record in the West, yet rank 20th in the league in offensive rating (115.3 ORtg).

Nothing comes easy for Memphis. The Grizzlies rank 2nd in defensive rating and play at the fifth-fastest pace in the league (110.4 DRtg, 101.5 PACE). So, to say that they appear somewhat vulnerable almost every time out might be an understatement. In most cases, teams tend to adjust their pace of play based on strong suit. For example, teams that play great offense and poor defense often try to ramp up the pace and create extra possessions; and vice-versa for teams that play excellent defense and mediocre offense.

However, Memphis tends to do the exact opposite. Instead of slowing things down and leaning on their second-ranked defense in a halfcourt set, the Grizzlies try to run-and-gun in transition like the Warriors or Kings, and it simply doesn’t work as well for them.

While on the other hand, the Mavericks have been stuck in no man’s land for years now, primarily due to the fact that as long as Luka Doncic is on the roster, they’ll always have the DNA of an excellent regular-season team, having won 42+ games in three straight campaigns, and that’s certainly nothing to be ashamed of. However, they’ve never surrounded Luka with the pieces necessary to truly contend for a championship, which was on full display in their five-game loss to Golden State in last year’s Western Conference Finals.

So, when the opportunity presented itself, the Mavs decided to take a big swing on Kyrie Irving at the trade deadline, which in theory, gives them far more upside in regards to title contention, yet has decimated their depth, and at this point, without Doncic and Irving on the floor, this team is a total dumpster fire. The Mavericks are 5-9 in their last 14 games, which primarily stems from the fact that they rank 26th in defensive rating during that span (118.6 DRtg), and when a team’s top two scoring options are banged-up, it’s imperative that the supporting cast picks up some slack at the other end.

In the two-game set between these teams on March 11th and 13th, the Grizzlies escaped with victories in both matchups while combining with Dallas for just 206 PPG across those affairs. So, I’ll take the ‘under’ in Monday’s rematch.
