The opening round of the NBA Playoffs resumes on Monday night with a compelling Game 2 showdown between the Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia 76ers. Coverage begins from the Wells Fargo Center in South Philly at 7:30 p.m. ET on TNT.
BROOKLYN NETS vs. PHILADELPHIA 76ERS BETTING PREDICTION
Game 1 of this series was a mismatch in all sorts of ways. The Sixers jumped out to a comfortable 67-58 lead in the first half and never looked back on the way to a 121-101 victory, a contest in which they knocked down 21 of their 43 three-point attempts, their best performance from long-range of the entire year thus far.
It would be natural to assume that the Sixers are destined to show some regression in their long-range shooting numbers from Game 1 to Game 2, and to a certain extent, they probably will; however, the fact that they were willing to jack up 43 three-point attempts and wound up hitting almost half of them in Saturday’s series opener certainly doesn’t come as a coincidence.
In the aftermath of the departures of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, the Nets are left with a plethora of dynamic wing talent, spearheaded by new talent such as Mikal Bridges, Cameron Johnson, and Dorian Finney Smith, and the list extends all the way to names such as Royce O’Neale, Seth Curry, Joe Harris, and Spencer Dinwiddie.
In matchups against teams that prefer to utilize smaller lineups, the Nets are suited to give some of those teams trouble; the Nets’ rotation is essentially just a revolving door of a bunch of guards and forwards plus Nic Claxton, which might work in their favor against some lesser frontcourts, but nobody in Brooklyn’s lineup is capable of defending a dominant force like Joel Embiid 1-on-1 down low, and that notion was on full display in Game 1.
Saturday was a little bit of a slow day at the office for Embiid, he scored just 26 points on 7-of-15 from the field and grabbed five rebounds in the Sixers' commanding Game 1 victory; however, don’t mistake his relatively modest totals on the statsheet for a lack of presence in the contest. The Nets double-teamed on nearly every touch, and because of that, Philly’s shooters were shooting wide open threes all game, and it shows in their magnificent numbers from beyond the arc.
Clearly, the Nets didn’t do their homework on this Sixers’ team prior to Game 1. On average, the Sixers put up just 32.6 three-point attempts per game, which ranks in the middle of the pack, but they knock them down at the most accurate clip in the entire league (38.7 3P%); shamelessly daring Philly to shoot the longball is a slippery slope.
Will the Nets learn from the mistakes that they made in Game 1? Only time will tell, and take nothing away from Mikal Bridges, he’s a phenomenal player, and he played lights out in Game 1; but unless Brooklyn makes some serious adjustments at the defensive end in the near future, we’re probably looking at a very brief series between these squads.
