Timberwolves vs Mavericks Picks & Prediction

In the final moments of the most recent meeting between these teams, this series appeared to be headed to Dallas for Game 3 tied at one game apiece, as Anthony Edwards sank a pair of free throws with 1:29 left on the clock to give the Timberwolves a 108-103 lead. However, all hell broke loose after that, as Kyrie Irving drilled a 3-pointer to cut the lead to two on the next possession, followed by a turnover by Jaden McDaniels at the other end for Minnesota, and then an ice-cold, long range stepback by Luka Doncic to win the game for Dallas at a final score of 109-108 in Game 2.

So, instead, the series score reads 2-0 at this point and time, with Dallas seeking a 3-game advantage at home in Game 3, now listed at -600 to win the conference. But the overall numbers may be a little bit misleading given the way in which the first two matchups of this series played out…

The Wolves led entering the fourth quarter of both matchups in this series, as they entered the final 12 minutes of Game 1 leading by a score of 83-82; and by a score of 86-79 in Game 2. However, Minnesota’s lack of playoff experience compared to Dallas ultimately showed through down the stretch of both contests, as the Mavs posted a combined point differential of +19 in the second halves of Games 1 and 2, which allowed the Mavs to escape with a pair of thrilling come from behind victories at an incredibly thin margin of +4 for the series, overall.

The way it stands now, I have a tough time imagining Minnesota coming back to win this series, needing wins in four of the next five games, with three of those matchups coming on the road in Dallas (if necessary). But if the first two games of this series taught us anything, it’s that these two teams are separated by a razor thin margin – and after letting not one, but TWO wins slip through their fingertips at home in Games 1 and 2, I think we’ll see the Wolves come roaring back in Game 3.

All-in-all, Minnesota has traveled pretty well this postseason. The Wolves own a record of 4-1 on the road since the start of the playoffs, with their only loss as visitors coming in Game 5 against Denver, in the aftermath of claiming road wins in Games 1 and 2.

Once a team goes down 3-0 in the playoffs, you can go ahead and start digging their grave. Nobody comes back, and Minnesota is well-aware of that. I expect to see the Wolves play with a sense of pure desperation in Sunday’s contest, which should move the needle enough in their direction to account for the 4-point margin that separated them in the first two games of this series. A huge imbalance in motivation tends to be more of a meaningful factor than homecourt advantage when the margins are as thin as the gap between these two teams. I’ll back Minnesota to win Game 3.
