Timberwolves vs Mavericks Picks & Prediction

The Mavericks enter Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals with a 3-0 series lead over Minnesota. However, don’t be fooled by the steep overall deficit. These two teams are very evenly matched, and now it’s desperation-time for the Timberwolves with Minnesota officially on the brink of elimination.

It may be too late for the Wolves to come back and win the series, given the way the first three games unfolded in crunch time. But, this Minnesota squad plays with a ton of pride, and the back-and-forth nature of all three matchups leads me to believe a temporary swing in motivation between these two teams may move the needle enough for the Wolves to get over the hump in a game or two with Dallas boasting a comfortable three-game lead.

The score was neck-and-neck entering the fourth quarter of all three matchups. The Wolves led by a score of 83-82 with 12 minutes left to play in Game 1; they led by a score of 86-79 in Game 2; and the score was tied at 87-87 entering the fourth quarter of Game 3. However, it all boils down to this: the Mavericks have a duo of cold-blooded killers in closing time capable of finishing big games, while the Wolves are clearly still a young, work-in-progress.

In the fourth quarters of the first three matchups of this series, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving combined for a total of 58 points on 18-of-32 (56.3%) from the field and 9-of-13 (69.2%) from 3-point range to help seal the deal for the Mavs in a trio of highly competitive battles they won by an an average margin of 4.3 points per victory. While contrarily, the Wolves faded away late in those contests. They scored only 64 points (as an entire team) in the fourth quarters of the first three games of the series, while shooting 24-of-55 (43.6%) from the field and 8-of-26 (30.8%) from long range in those pivotal 36 minutes of play, which has been the only real edge Dallas in this matchup, despite the gap appearing quite big at the moment.

Not to pat myself on the back, but I picked Dallas to win this series from the start, and I highly doubt we’ll see Minnesota become the first team in NBA history to come from behind to advance after trailing 3-0. However, the Wolves (-170) were originally favored to win this series for a reason, and they’ve proven they can hang with Dallas deep into games. They just haven’t been able to seal the deal in crunch time.

So, with that in mind, I’m going to back Minnesota to win the first half of Tuesday’s contest. The Wolves have either led, or the score has been tied, entering the fourth quarter of all three matchups in this series – and while I still don’t quite trust them to steal one on the road, I expect to see another strong, early effort from Minnesota in a desperate attempt to avoid a sweep in Game 4.
