The second round of the NBA Playoffs continues with a pivotal 2-game slate on Tuesday night -- and the second matchup of the evening we'll preview is Timberwolves vs. Nuggets Game 5, which is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET on TNT.

The T-Wolves are 4.5-point road underdogs on the spread in Tuesday's contest, while the total is set at over/under 205.5 total points at DraftKings.

Timberwolves vs Nuggets Picks & Prediction

The fact that this series is tied at two games apiece isn’t overly surprising, however, the way in which we got to this point is rather stunning. Neither squad has won a home game yet, with the road team boasting a perfect 4-0 mark as we shift locations back to Denver for a pivotal Game 5, which is quite a turn of events for a pair of squads that posted combined records of 63-19 at home opposed to 50-32 on the road during the regular season.

The vast majority of basketball fans declared Denver dead and crowned Minnesota champion in the aftermath of the first two matchups of this series. The Timberwolves posted a point differential of +33 on the road in Denver in Games 1 and 2 – and for a brief moment, Minnesota was on top of the basketball world…

At the time, the T-Wolves owned a perfect 6-0 record in the postseason. Some people were already calling Anthony Edwards the new face of the league. The spread had swung from Nuggets -7.5 in Game 2 to Nuggets +3.5 for Game 3. Life was good for Minnesota. While subsequently, all hope appeared to be lost for the defending champs, as the Nuggets found themselves needing wins in two-of-three road games in order to erase the deficit and win the series, which seemed highly unlikely after getting thoroughly outplayed at home in Games 1 and 2.

However, right on cue, the defending champs struck back in emphatic fashion in Games 3 and 4, as the Nuggets accumulated a point differential of +35 on the way to a pair of dominant road victories to even the series at two games apiece, while shooting 55% from the field and 47% from 3-point range in those two contests – and now nobody truly knows what to expect from these two teams as we reset for a 3-game sprint to the finish line.

I recommend sticking to your guns with Denver at home in Game 5. The Nuggets have defended their home floor as well as anybody over the last few years, which includes a record of 33-8 at home this season, and 34-7 last season – and I’m not willing to ignore a trend of that magnitude simply because of two losses in which the Wolves waltzed into their building and jacked up a total of 60 3-point attempts and knocked down 24 of them (40%) to open this series. 

Once you get past the Wolves winning Game 1, there’s plenty of situational and psychological factors that could help explain why we still haven’t seen the home team win a game in this series. The way I see it, the Nuggets couldn’t quite figure out how to attack Minnesota’s size and physicality in the first two games of the series, which put them in a quick two-game hole – and you know what they say, the most desperate team in basketball is a team down 0-2. 

So, all of a sudden, what probably would’ve been a 1-1 split in Minnesota ends up turning into consecutive road wins for Denver with the Nuggets shifting into survival-mode early, frantically trying to crack the code to the Wolves’ top-ranked defense – and despite not looking up to the task in Games 1 and 2, it seems like they finally found something in Games 3 and 4. So now, with both teams on an even surface and the motivational factors back in balance, I think we’ll see the home-away trends finally revert to the norm moving forward in this series. I’ll lay the points with Denver at home in Game 5.
