The second Monday Night Football doubleheader of the 2023 season kicks things off with a matchup between a pair of undefeated NFC teams, as the Philadelphia Eagles travel to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Coverage begins from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa at 7:15 p.m. ET on ABC.

Matchup Spread Total Moneyline

Tampa Bay originally entered this season with very low expectations. The Buccaneers opened with the second-worst odds to win the NFC at +4000, only ahead of the Cardinals in preseason futures markets (+8500), but to the surprise of many, Baker Mayfield and the Bucs have scored 20+ points in back-to-back wins over the Vikings and Bears to open the season, and now, they return home to host the Eagles for a clash of unbeaten squads in Week 3.

According to VegasInsider’s Patrick Everson, the spread for this matchup has been on the move all week. The Eagles originally opened as -6.5-point favorites, but after further discussion with TwinSpires director of retail trading Zachary Lucas on Wednesday, he noted that this line jumped a full 1.5 points to Eagles -5 due to sharp action on Tampa Bay, with the Bucs receiving roughly 58% of the total money wagered at the time of the latest odds movement.

Last season with Tom Brady, the Buccaneers managed to win the NFC South with a record of 8-9, despite their offense ranking 25th in the league in both scoring and yards per play. So, you may ask, “how did the Bucs manage to win eight games last year?” Well, the answer is rather simple, and it’s the same way that they managed to win their first two games of this season, which is by playing great defense and protecting the football.

The Buccaneers currently own a +5 turnover differential through the first two weeks of the season, and when combined with a defense that’s capable of holding middle-of-the-road opponents to under 20 points, the Bucs are certainly capable of surprising some teams, especially since they brought back over half of the starters from last year’s top-notch defensive group.

That said, this Eagles team is a totally different beast. The Eagles have scored 24+ points in 17 of their last 20 games started by Jalen Hurts, including last year’s playoffs. And quite frankly, I just don’t think the Bucs’ offense has enough juice to pull off the upset here. However, Tampa’s defense is still good enough to prevent this game from getting totally out of hand. I’m combining Philly +1 and under 51 in a 6-point teaser for my best bet in this one.

Philadelphia Eagles Betting Analysis

Despite what Philly’s overall team average of 29.5 points per game through Week 2 may lead you to believe, the Eagles certainly had their fair share of offensive struggles in their first two matchups of the season. In Week 1 against New England, the Eagles offense generated just 19 points on 251 total yards. They were fortunate enough to get an early boost via a pick-six by Darius Slay, but even with Philly’s head start, the game still went down to the wire as the Patriots drove to the 19-yard line with 58 seconds left on the clock, and had a real chance to win the game in the closing moments.

Then in Week 2, the Eagles were forced to settle for two field goals and a touchdown on six first-half drives against Minnesota, before finally opening the floodgates for a 21-point explosion in the second half. All things considered, Philly is the far superior squad in this Monday night matchup. But it’s tough to trust the Eagles laying nearly a touchdown on the road in this spot following back-to-back wins in one-score games.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Betting Analysis

Some will say that the Buccaneers haven’t played anybody yet and Philly will be their first big test. However, to give credit where credit is due, the Vikings and Bears aren’t exactly pushovers, and very few people pinned those matchups as wins for Tampa prior to Week 1.

The Vikings won 13 games last year, and any way you slice it, hitting the road and outdueling Minnesota’s ticking time bomb of an offense is no easy feat. And while now,  everybody is already selling their Justin Fields stock following the Bears miserable 0-2 start to the season, let’s not act like we all expected Chicago’s offense to revert to such a low level of play after their strong finish to last season.

All things considered, the Buccaneers look pretty similar to the team that snuck into the playoffs at 8-9 last year: they play mediocre offense and great defense. And in an NFC South Division with all four teams projected to win 10 games or less, that might just be enough to make another run at the division crown. But as the spread for this matchup indicates, they still stand head-and-shoulders below heavyweight contenders like Philly.
