Matchup Spread Total Moneyline

All of last year, I stood on my soapbox and preached that the Giants were grossly overrated by the wide majority of the football community, but I think it’s safe to say that even New York’s biggest naysayers, like myself, didn’t imagine the Giants getting outscored 60-0 in their first six quarters of play this season.

However, after getting stomped by a score of 40-0 by the Cowboys in Week 1, and then heading to halftime of their Week 2 matchup trailing the Cardinals by a score of 20-0, the Giants finally flipped the switch in the second half against Arizona, erupting for 31 points on 350 total yards in the final two quarters to complete a thrilling comeback win and miraculously get to 1-1 entering Week 3.

Following the Giants’ Week 2 win on Sunday, VegasInsider’s Patrick Everson talked to SuperBook risk advisor Casey Degnon, and Degnon said that he expects the public to be on the Niners via teasers and moneyline parlays this Thursday. However, he also noted that he could see the straight-bet ticket count finishing close. But that would have been a totally different story if the Giants didn't come back from 20 down at the half.

Feet to the flames, if I had to pick a side of the spread in this one, I would back the Giants to nab a backdoor cover. But certainly not because I have faith in their defense slowing down Brock Purdy and company. The Niners scored 30 points in back-to-back contests out of the gate against the Steelers and Rams. So, it’s probably fair to expect a similar scoring output in a matchup against a Giants defense that got shredded for 40 points by Dallas in Week 1, and then surrendered 28 points to Josh Dobbs and the Cardinals in Week 2.

In theory, that leaves somewhere in the ballpark of just 14-20 points that the Giants need to score in order to cash ‘over’ tickets at a total of 44.5 for this one, and that’s my top play of the evening. The current iteration of this New York team rarely pops in the scoring department, highlighted by the Giants scoring 25+ points in just 2-of-17 regular season games last year. However, it’s also very rare for them to bottom out like they did in Week 1, highlighted by the Giants scoring 20+ points in 12 of those 17 games, and falling short of 16 points just once.

If you are new to the “The Giants are Overrated-Train,” welcome aboard. But as the first guy to purchase a ticket on this train, let me also be the first to warn you that this Giants team is pesky and weird, and fading them can be a total headache, especially laying such a large amount of points. I’m taking the over.

Score Prediction: Niners 30, Giants 22
Best Bet: Over 44.5 (-110)

New York Giants Betting Analysis

As overrated as this New York team originally was heading into Week 1, it seems like the pendulum has fully swung in the opposite direction following an ankle injury to Saquon Barkley, and now, the Giants appear to be a bit undervalued in this primetime spot.

The main takeaway from the Giants’ comeback victory last week should be the fact that this team refuses to roll over and quit. Even if San Francisco runs away with this game early, expect to see the Giants scratch and claw their way to enough garbage time points to make double-digit spread bettors sweat.

San Francisco 49ers Betting Analysis

The Niners have arguably been the best team in the NFC over the last calendar year or so, minus their incredibly unfortunate QB situation in the conference championship game. And they haven’t missed a beat to start this season, first pummeling the Steelers by a score of 30-7 in Week 1, and then posting a convincing 30-23 win over the Rams in Week 2. Which was nearly a 10-point victory and cover, but Sean McVay decided to be a man-of-the-people by sending out the field goal unit on the final play of the game to seal the backdoor.

Personally, I’ll be stunned if New York wins this game outright. But I’ve also been burned by this Giants team far too many times to warrant laying double-digits against them in pretty much any matchup. The Giants might not be legitimate contenders to win the NFC like San Francisco, but they shouldn’t be treated like conference bottom dwellers either.
