WHAT IS THE JAMES NORRIS TROPHY?

The James Norris Trophy is given to the best defenseman in the NHL. The award was named after former Detroit Red Wings owner James Norris, with Red Kelly winning the first award in 1953. 

Doug Harvey won seven of the first nine awards, while Bobby Orr has won eight total which is the most for any player. Cale Makar of the Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche picked up the Norris in 2022, the organization's first-ever win in the category. The past six winners have been first-time recipients, while Erik Karlsson is the most recent two-time winner.
