FLORIDA PANTHERS vs. WASHINGTON CAPITALS PREDICTIONS

The Panthers headed home for Game 5 at FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, and they fell behind 3-0 early in the second period on home ice. They were staring a huge deficit in the face, and the potential of heading back to the nation's capital down 3-2 while facing elimination. The second half of the game went in favor of the home side, rattling off five unanswered goals.

Florida's Carter Verhaeghe set a franchise record with five points, including a pair of goals, and Claude Giroux had a goal and an assist to help the home side grab the upper hand. Now, the Capitals have their backs against the wall heading back home. They can force a Game 7, but still will have to travel to Sunrise to try and drop the President's Trophy winners at home. Things looked bleak early on for the Cats, but now there is light at the end of the tunnel after a difficult series.

FLORIDA PANTHERS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 61-20-6
  • ATS: 44-43
  • O/U: 46-33-8

The Panthers hit the road looking to close this series out. They're an impressive 20-8 in the past 28 games on the road, including a 3-2 overtime victory in Game 4. They're also 20-7 in the past 27 as a road favorite, and they will cost you nearly two times your potential return in this one.

Florida has also responded well when receiving a day of rest, going 37-15 in the past 52 when sitting for a day. In addition, they're 7-1 in the past eight games on a Friday, for whatever that's worth.

As far as totals are concerned, the UNDER is 5-2-1 in the past eight games on the road, while going 9-4-4 in the past 17 games both as a favorite, and overall. They're 5-2-1 to the UNDER in the past eight games on the road, too.

WASHINGTON CAPITALS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 46-28-13
  • ATS: 45-42
  • O/U: 48-35-4

The Capitals were unable to capitalize on their big start in Game 5, coming apart like a cheap suit in the second and third period. The Caps have dropped seven of the past nine games overall, while going just 1-6 in the past seven when playing on a day of rest. They're also 2-5 in the past seven games as an underdog, while going 3-9 in the past 12 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals Round games.

In terms of the total, the OVER is 20-9-2 in the past 31 games overall, while going 23-11-2 in the past 36 games at home. The OVER is 11-5-1 in the past 17 games as an underdog, too, while cashing at a 7-2-1 clip as a home 'dog.

FLORIDA PANTHERS vs. WASHINGTON CAPITALS CONCLUSION

It was all there for the Capitals to take, but they couldn't hang onto the lead, and now need to win each of the final two games of this series or their season will be over. I think that the Capitals will get it done on home ice in Game 6, and of course anything can happen in a decisive Game 7. However, if Washington gets by this one, and they're an attractive live 'dog on home ice, they'll be big-time underdogs in a potential Game 7, and you have to love the home team there.

But first things first, Washington needs to get this one first. The Caps should get it done at home, but it might require an overtime or two. After a couple of lopsided outings in Games 2 and 3, this series has really tightened up nicely.
