CALGARY FLAMES vs. EDMONTON OILERS PREDICTIONS

The Flames went to Edmonton for Game 3, and suffered a 4-1 setback at Rogers Place. The Oilers and Flames combined for a scoreless first period before Edmonton erupted for four goals in the second. Zach Hyman kicked off the scoring before Evander Kane notched a natural hat trick. Leon Draisaitl chipped in with assists on all four of the goals, while Connor McDavid had helpers on three of the markers.

Mike Smith was playing extremely well before a late collision with Milan Lucic, which was a bit controversial depending upon which fanbase you are a part of in Alberta. Of course the Flames fans say it was unintentional, and with an unbiased eye, it appears that Lucic did try to hold on up the contact, which was behind the net as Smith played the puck. The Oilers fans screamed and moaned, and cheered Smith loudly once he emerged from the locker room later to finish up. He wasn't the same after the collision, and his shutout bid was spoiled by Oliver Kylington with 4:51 to play in regulation, but the Oilers were still able to post a 4-1 win to take the pivotal Game 3.

We've seen a few different games in this series. The series opener was a wild 9-6 win by the Flames on home ice. Game 2 was a 5-3 road victory by the Oilers, and Game 3 was a little more defensive, with just one offensive spurt. We've had it all, and in Game 4, who knows what else we'll see.

CALGARY FLAMES BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 55-26-11
  • ATS: 48-44
  • O/U: 44-40-8

The most shocking part about this series so far is the play of Jacob Markstrom. In the opening round against the Dallas Stars, he looked Vezina quality, just like he did all season, posting four wins while allowing 11 total goals in the seven-game set with the Stars. In this series, he has already coughed up 15 goals, and Dan Vladar replaced Markstrom in Game 3 after two periods.

The Flames have won just once in the past six road games, and they're 1-6 in the past seven as a road 'dog, too. In the playoffs, Calgary is 7-21 in the past 28 games when an underdog.

For totals, the OVER is 3-1-1 in the past five games overall, while going 5-2 in the past seven meetings overall. The UNDER is 5-2 in the past seven trips to Edmonton, however.

EDMONTON OILERS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 55-30-7
  • ATS: 45-47
  • O/U: 47-42-3

The Oilers have rolled up 21 victory in the past 28 home games, while winning 19 of the past 26 games overall. The Oilers are just 4-9 in the past 13 playoff games when favored, however.

For totals, the OVER has connected in 16 of the past 23 games at home, while going 18-8 in the past 26 when favored. The OVER is 6-2 in the past eight in the Western Conference Semifinals, and 15-4 in the past 19 as a home favorite, too.

CALGARY FLAMES vs. EDMONTON OILERS CONCLUSION

We saw a lot less fire-wagon hockey in Game 3 in Edmonton, and the Flames were held to just one late meaningless goal. The Oilers are within two games of moving to the Western Conference Finals, but there is still a lot of hockey to be played in this series.

After some wide-open hockey in Calgary, we're likely to see a lot more defense and physical play as this series goes on. The biggest question for Calgary is whether or not Markstrom will be the same. He posted nine shutouts in the regular season and a 10th shutout in the first round against Dallas. Can he re-gain his form in this one, or are the Oilers going to push the Flames to the brink? I think Edmonton continues to keep its foot on the gas in a higher-scoring game than we had in Game 3, but not as crazy as the first two games.
