CAROLINA HURRICANES vs. NEW YORK RANGERS PREDICTIONS

The Carolina Hurricanes are a tale of two teams. They're 6-0 in front of their raucous home crowd, and a dismal 0-4 in four games on the road. Carolina is averaging 3.14 goals per game at home, with 1.17 goals per game allowed. In four road losses, the Canes are averaging just 1.8 goals per outing, while coughing up 4.3 goals per contest. How can a change of venue mean that much? That's what head coach Rod Brind'Amour is feverishly trying to figure out, as he continues to make adjustments.

The New York Rangers have scored a total of just four goals in this series so far, but they have allowed just five goals. This is what the Dallas-Calgary series looked like in the first round, and that series went seven games. We're seeing great goaltending, strong defense and goals are at a premium. It's a stark contrast from the regular season when these teams played four times, averaging a total of 6.0 combined goals per meeting.

CAROLINA HURRICANES BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 60-24-8
  • ATS: 45-47
  • O/U: 42-45-5

The Hurricanes have great aspirations to recreate that 2006 Stanley Cup Finals win, energizing a loud, but generally fickle hockey crowd in Raleigh. The home crowd is going its part to give the Canes every advantage at PNC Arena, but when the Canes hit the road they have been a completely different team. They need to find a way to outwork the opposition, or they're going to bow out when they lose home-ice advantage.

At the horn on Sunday, Max Domi and Ryan Lindgren got into a tussle, head coach Gerard Gallant was shouting at former Rangers D-Man now Cane Tony DeAngelo, and there is likely to be some punishment meted out early by the Rangers. Even if New York takes some ill-advised penalties, the Carolina power-play unit has struggled so much, New York is likely to be fine. The Canes are just 5-for-43 (11.6%) on the man advantage, and that's not going to get it done against anybody.

The Canes are 0-4 in the past four road games, 0-4 in the past four as an underdog and the UNDER has cashed in each of the past four games, too. The OVER is 19-7-2 in the past 28 games on the road, but the UNDER is 9-3-3 in the past 15 Conference Semifinal Round games.

NEW YORK RANGERS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 57-28-7
  • ATS: 46-46
  • O/U: 39-50-3

The Rangers have won four in a row on home ice since a triple-overtime Game 1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round. In five home playoff games, New York is averaging 4.0 goals per game, and it has allowed 13 total goals, or 2.6 goals per contest.

The Rangers are 24-9 in the past 33 games as a home favorite, too, while going 38-13 in the past 51 overall when favored. They're also 4-0 in the past four playoff games when favored.

In terms of totals, the OVER is 9-1-2 in the past 12 playoff games when favored, while going 4-1 in the past five at MSG. The OVER is 7-3 in the past 10 games overall, too, as defense hasn't exactly been a hallmark of this team. The Canes need to figure out a way to take advantage of the lack of D for the Rangers.

CAROLINA HURRICANES vs. NEW YORK RANGERS CONCLUSION

The Hurricanes are due for a road win, and Game 4 in New York would be the perfect place for them to get on track. The Penguins put the Rangers in a 3-1 hole in the first round, and it still wasn't good enough to oust New York. Carolina put plenty of shots on Igor Shesterkin in Game 3, firing 44 shots at the Russian tendy, and he made 43 saves. They need to find a way, and they need to figure out the power play.

New York has taken advantage of the fact the Carolina offense has been having a bit of a power outage. The Rangers just haven't played very good defense in this playoffs, and outside of Adam Fox, the personnel just isn't there to play a shutdown style. They rely too much of Shesterkin. I expect the Hurricanes to be flying around in Game 4. They cannot lose again on road ice and expect to win every game at home. Eventually their luck is going to run out. But I also don't expect Antti Raanta to keep matching Shesterkin, either.

I am going to risk it and take the Hurricanes to finally snap out of their road funk, although it might take overtime to do so in a slightly higher scoring game than we've been seeing in this series previously.
