CAROLINA HURRICANES vs. NEW YORK RANGERS PREDICTIONS
The magic number is five to the Carolina Hurricanes. There are five teams remaining in the Stanley Cup playoffs, and Carolina needs five victories to get to the Stanley Cup Finals.
The New York Rangers lost in Game 5 in Raleigh, and they need to win each of the next two elimination games to extend their season. New York fell 3-1 in Raleigh on Thursday night, the first time the Hurricanes have scored more than two goals in a game in this series.
While Carolina holds a 3-2 series lead, it is 7-0 on home ice, and 0-5 on the road in these playoffs. Carolina has to figure out a way to win on the road. Home teams have won all 12 of Carolina's games in the postseason, tying the longest streak in NHL history. While Carolina has a tremendous plus-17 goal differential at home, it has a minus-13 goal differential in five road losses. That's stunning for a team which was an impressive 25-12-4 in the NHL, tied for the second best mark during the regular season.
New York is trying to prevent Carolina from getting back to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2019. The Rangers last appeared in the ECF back in 2015, losing in seven games to the Tampa Bay Lightning, which would be their opponent if they can win the remaining two games in this series.

CAROLINA HURRICANES BETTING ANALYSIS
Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)
- SU: 61-25-8
- ATS: 46-48
- O/U: 42-47-5
In Thursday's Game 5 win in Raleigh, Vincent Trocheck scored a shorthanded goal in the first period, Teuvo Teravainen scored a power-play goal in the second and Andrei Svechnikov capped off the scoring with an even-strength marker in the third. The Hurricanes need to find a way to get that kind of consistent scoring, especially from its stars, on the road now.
The Hurricanes have won 13 of the past 18 games overall, but they're 0-5 in the past five road games in these playoffs. They're also 6-21 in the previous 27 playoff games as an underdog, and 0-5 in the past five road games as a 'dog.
For totals, it's all about the UNDER, going 6-0 in the past six games, while cashing in five straight when playing on a day of rest. The OVER is 10-4-1 in the past 15 games on the road, although 2-0 in this series at MSG.
NEW YORK RANGERS BETTING ANALYSIS
Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)
- SU: 58-29-7
- ATS: 48-46
- O/U: 39-50-3
The Rangers outscored the Hurricanes 7-2 in a pair of home wins in Games 3 and 4. They're averaging just 1.8 goals per game in this series, however, as Antti Raanta has equaled Vezina Trophy candidate Igor Shesterkin in this series.
New York has won five of the past seven games overall, while going 39-13 in the past 52 games as a favorite. They're also 5-0 in the previous five postseason games when favored.
In terms of the totals, the UNDER has cashed in five consecutive games for the Rangers, while going 22-8-9 in the past 39 games in the Conference Semifinals round. The OVER is 9-3 in the past 12 as a favorite, while going 9-2-2 in the past 13 playoff games when favored.
CAROLINA HURRICANES vs. NEW YORK RANGERS CONCLUSION
Sooner or later the Hurricanes are going to win a playoff game on the road. Carolina was dominant away from home, including a pair of wins in April at Madison Square Garden, which was a huge reason why it won the Metropolitan Division, and New York did not.
I don't expect the trend of the UNDER cashing to end, but I do think Carolina finally figures out a way to solve Shesterkin at MSG, and get it first playoff victory of the postseason. Carolina showed some glimpses of being the Stanley Cup contender it feels it can be, but it needs to show urgency and 110 percent on the road, while also getting the power play to work away from home. I think Carolina checks off a lot of those boxes, although it wouldn't be surprising to see more than regulation needed for it to get over the hump.
