COLORADO AVALANCHE vs. EDMONTON OILERS PREDICTIONS

Well, Game 2 was definitely quite the change from Game 1, at least for the visitors.

The Avalanche were forced to start backup goaltender Pavel Francouz after losing Darcy Kuemper in the second period of Game 1 due to an upper-body injury. No Kuemper, no problem. Francouz not only stepped in and did an admirable job, he pitched a 24-save shutout just one day before his 32nd birthday. It was the second-career playoff shutout for the Swiss-born goalie.

Game 1 ended with a crazy 8-6 score. It was similar to Edmonton's series-opening loss to Calgary in the second round, which saw the Oilers on the short end of a 9-6 loss on the road. The Oilers were unable to recreate the results from Game 2 of that series which saw them win 5-3. They were stymied at every turn by Francouz, and now stare at an 0-2 series hole heading back to the Great White North.

The Avalanche defense was suffocating at times, shutting down Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid and Evander Kane. In fact, that trio managed just seven combined shots on goal. Draisaitl was also held without an assist, snapping a nine-game streak with at least one apple.

COLORADO AVALANCHE BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 66-20-8
  • ATS: 47-47
  • O/U: 49-40-5

The Avalanche hit the road, and in these playoffs they have arguably had more success away from the Mile High City than at home. In fact, Colorado is 5-0 in its five away playoff games this season, while going 5-2 at home. The Carolina Hurricanes should maybe watch and see what the Avs are doing in road games and try and learn something.

The Avalanche are favored again, and they're 60-19 in the past 79 games when favored. They're also 19-7 in the past 26 playoff games as a favorite, and 36-17 in the previous 53 as a road fave.

As far as totals, the OVER is 4-1 in the past five games overall, while going 4-1 in the past five games on the road, too. They're also 4-1 in the past five playoff games as a fave, too.

EDMONTON OILERS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 57-32-7
  • ATS: 47-49
  • O/U: 50-43-3

The Oilers have struggled against the Avalanche, winning just once in the past six meetings, while the underdog is 0-8 in the previous eight in the series. The home team is 7-1 in the past eight meetings, however, so that's one trend which looks good for the Oil.

Edmonton has won 20 of the past 26 games at home, too, and the Oilers desperately need to get the win to stay in this series. They're just 8-17 in the pats 25 games as an underdog, and 2-5 in the previous seven postseason games as a 'dog.

For totals, like the Avs, it's all about the OVER for the Oilers. The OVER is 5-2 in the past seven games overall, while going 17-7 in the past 24 on home ice. The OVER is also 4-1 in the past five playoff games as an underdog.

COLORADO AVALANCHE vs. EDMONTON OILERS CONCLUSION

The Avalanche outgunned the Oilers in the opening game by an 8-6 count, and they dusted the Oil at home behind a backup goaltender in a 4-0 loss in Game 2. It would seem the Oilers are still OK returning to home ice, but the Avalanche haven't lost on the road in these playoffs in five games. Can the Oilers find the combination to top the Avs, something the Nashville Predators and St. Louis Blues were unable to do at home?

I think the Oilers will be able to grab the home split, but not win both games. They'll get it done in Game 3, outscoring Francouz and the Avalanche. Let's not get ahead of ourselves, but unless Game 3 is a dramatic beatdown by the home side, I'll likely be picking Colorado for the rebound.
