Betting on the Carolina Hurricanes
Based in Raleigh, the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes continue to attract both hockey fans and bettors in the Southeast region of the US. They remain the only NHL franchise in that part of the country outside of Florida.
Carolina Hurricanes Overview
The Hurricanes gravitated to the Southeast following 18 NHL seasons as the Hartford Whalers. The team’s first season in the league was 1979/1980 as an expansion franchise.
The years spent in Hartford were not all that memorable when it came to success in the postseason. The Whalers qualified for the NHL playoffs eight times in 18 years. In those eight seasons, the team failed to advance any further than the finals of the Adams Division in 1986.
A name change to the Hurricanes better suited the team’s new surroundings ahead of the 1997/1998 NHL season. Carolina qualified for the playoffs in its second season in the league. While the Hurricanes’ success in the postseason was also limited, everything came together in 2006.
The team advanced all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals that year. Carolina went on to beat the Edmonton Oilers in a thrilling 4-3 best-of-seven series win. Peter Laviolette was at the helm as head coach during that impressive run to Carolina’s only NHL title.
That league championship has remained the Hurricanes’ biggest highlight as a NHL franchise. However, there are signs of a turnaround in NC with a string of recent playoff appearances out of the Eastern Conference’s Metropolitan Division.
If you were to name the top NHL player in the overall history of this franchise, Cam Ward would receive quite a few votes. You could also add Ron Francis and Eric Staal to the list.
Carolina’s biggest league rival would probably be the Washington Capitals. Spending a few seasons in the Southeast Division, you could add the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning to that list.
A popular way to bet on Carolina games would be on the NHL total line. This betting line is normally set anywhere from 5.5 to 6.5 goals. You would wager on the UNDER or OVER on the combined number of goals scored by both teams to grade a winner in that type of hockey bet.
