Betting on the Edmonton Oilers

One of the more confounding team names in the National Hockey League belongs to the Edmonton Oilers. This fan favorite team has a rich history and a bright future. So, if you want to learn all about Edmonton Oilers betting, this is the place to be.

History of the Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers compete in the NHL in the Western Conference as a member of the Pacific Division. Starting in 2016, the team has played their home games out of Rogers Place.

Based in Edmonton, the franchise is one of only two NHL teams that are based in Alberta, with the other being the Calgary Flames. Because of their proximity to each other, this has led to a fierce rivalry between the two teams, dubbed the “Battle of Alberta.”

The Edmonton Oilers were founded in 1981, playing their first season the next year in 1972. The Oilers were one of twelve founding franchises in the major professional World Hockey Association. Originally, the plan was to have the Oilers be one of two WHA Alberta teams with the Calgary Broncos.

But, the Broncos relocated and turned into the Cleveland Crusaders prior to the first season of the WHA and the team was renamed to Alberta Oilers. They swapped back to their current name the following year, however. Then, through the NHL-WHA merger, as one of four franchises that was absorbed by the NHL, the Oilers joined the NHL in 1979.

Once the team joined the NHL, they won the Stanley Cup Championship five times during the reign of Wayne Gretzky, for their 1983-84 season, 1984-1985 season, 1986-1987 season, 1987-1988 season, and 1989-1990 season. The franchise has tied for the most championships wins by any team following the NHL-WHA merger, along with the Pittsburgh Penguins. They also hold the record for the most Stanley Cup wins by any team that joined the league in or after 1967.

Out of all the teams in the NHL, only the Montreal Canadiens have won more Stanley Cup Championship titles since the NHL’s expansion in 1967. The Oilers team in 1980s was so successful that it was honored by the Hockey Hall of Fame with dynasty status.

The Oilers have had a number of renowned players, including Glenn Anderson, Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, Kevin Lowe, Paul Coffey, Andy Moog, and Grant Fuhr.

A very popular bet to place on NHL hockey games is a moneyline bet. A moneyline bet is based around who will be victorious in a face off. Here is an example of what a moneyline bet would look like:

  • Edmonton Oilers: -130
  • Calgary Flames: +130

With this example, the Edmonton Oilers would be the favored team to win, with odds of -130. That means for every $1 you hope to win, you need to risk $1.30, to wager $130 to win $100. The other team in this game who are the underdogs, the Calgary Flames, has odds of +130. That means for every $1 risked, you could win $1.30, to bet $100 to win $130.

Betting in Canada

Back in the summer of 2021, in August, Canada nationally legalized single-event sports betting. However, it is up to the individual provinces to regulate it. Alberta has legalized sports betting for eligible residents through Play Alberta. The legal age to gamble in Alberta is 18 years of age or older.
