Champions League Odds Favor English Clubs

The chalk largely held up in the Champions League Quarterfinals. Liverpool, Manchester City, and Real Madrid all advanced, but Bayern Munich were stunned by Villarreal. That has led to Liverpool pulling level with Manchester City in terms of the overall Champions League futures odds as the Reds will be facing The Yellow Submarine in the semifinals. City will have to beat the most decorated team in the history of the Champions League if they are going to win their first title.

We might see an all-English Champions League Final for the third time in the last four years. Liverpool topped Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in Madrid to win this competition three years ago, while Chelsea upended Manchester City 1-0 to claim their second title last year.

Liverpool and Manchester City have a lot of recent history with one another. City held off Liverpool to win the Premier League title by a single point three years ago in the most exciting English title race of our generation. Liverpool roared back the following season to celebrate their first domestic title in over three decades, and they sent City crashing out of the Champions League in the quarterfinals four years ago.

Anything less than a Champions League title would be a major disappointment to Manchester City at this point. City have been among the favorites to win the competition for nearly a decade, but they have only made one final despite shelling out billions for their stars. That has made them more prominent than long-time big brother Manchester United, but the ownership group is desperately looking for European success.

The most successful English team in Champions League history is Liverpool. The Reds have won the Champions League six times, and only two clubs on the continent have more titles in Europe’s premier competition. Jurgen Klopp continues to get the most out of this club as Liverpool’s pockets aren’t quite as deep as those of City.

Real Madrid is by far the most accomplished team in Champions League history with a record 13 titles. This year’s tournament hasn’t been easy for them though. They needed a late comeback to beat Paris Saint-Germain, and Real Madrid almost blew a two-goal lead at the Bernabeu against Chelsea. They aren’t as strong as they have been in the recent past, but they can certainly prolong City’s nightmare on this stage.

It's been a dream run for Villarreal after failing to win its group in the Group Stage. They Yellow Submarine shocked Juventus in the Round of 16, and they proved the naysayers wrong once again with their 2-1 aggregate victory over German juggernauts Bayern Munich. They will have their work cut out for them to pull off a third straight upset, but they have proven up to the challenge.
