The World Cup field is set and ready to take to the pitch in late November. France hoisted the Jules Rimet Trophy after defeating Croatia 4-2 in the 2018 World Cup Final. Now four short years later, 32 teams will again vie for the Goddess of Victory. Qatar will be the focal point of this year’s tournament, which will begin at a later than typical time due to the extreme heat endured in the region.

France brings back much of the same team from 2018, including Kylian Mbappe who was able to see the back of the net four times. Harry Kane won the 2018 Golden Boot with six goals and history suggests that six is the magic number to win the coveted award.

CONTENTS

Five of the past eight Golden Boot winners in the World Cup have finished with six, two of the eight finished with five. Portugal’s Ronaldo scored eight in the 2002 World Cup, the most in more than 50 years. With the matchups all set, the Golden Boot odds have steadily been released by all the major players in the sportsbook world.

2022 Golden Boot Favorites

Harry Kane

After winning the award back in 2018, Harry Kane looks to make history in becoming the only two-time Golden Boot winner in the World Cup. The English striker propelled England to the Euro 2020 final (played in 2021), and Harry Kane registered four goals in the tournament. Harry Kane failed to score in the Euro 2020 final which would have tied him for the Golden Boot.

In the 2018 World Cup, Kane scored five of his goals in the group stage, netting both in the 2-1 win against Tunisia and a hat trick in the 6-1 win against Panama. This year’s World Cup should provide a tougher group stage, and the early group stage success Kane saw might not be reciprocated. England’s group stage includes Wales, USA, and Iran. Kane is just 28, and his career has been defined by his ability to score goals. In 71 games for the England squad, he has already been able to score 50 goals.

He is currently just four goals shy of overtaking Wayne Rooney in being England’s most prolific scorer. Rooney scored 53 in a 15-year period; Kane has donned the Three Lions jersey for just seven years. The juice is healthy enough to consider.

Kylian Mbappe

France won the 2018 World Cup and Kylian Mbappe received the Best Young Player Award. He scored four goals in 2018, only one of those was in the group stage. Mbappe seemed to get better as the tournament progressed, netting two in the knockout stage against Argentina. He also netted the final goal of the tournament to power France to a 4-2 victory to seal the win against Croatia.

He comes into this tournament right around +900, which is a very healthy bet for a top three player at just 23 years of age. He is one of the fastest players in the game and has the ability to find the openings. We expect France to advance far in the tournament which should provide more scoring opportunities. He will have to compete with another French star to earn the Golden Boot, with Karim Benzema making the 2022 roster.

Karim Benzema

Benzema’s absence has been one glaring embarrassment for France amidst all of their recent success. He was on the 2020 Euro team and performed highly last summer. Benzema just netted four goals at Euro 2020, one behind Ronaldo who won the Golden Boot last summer.  Benzema is one of the best strikers and helped Real Madrid claim both a La Liga title and a Champions League title, carrying the torch left behind by Cristiano Ronaldo.

France was knocked out of Euro 2020 by penalty kicks to Switzerland, which ended their tournament after just four games. Despite playing just four games Benzema was still able to bag four nets, so we can expect another strong goal scoring performance by the Algerian turned Frenchman.

Benzema is about +1200 to win the Golden Boot, and that is a nice price considering he has the sixth most goals in French history. Benzema is 34 years old, and this may be his last World Cup appearance, but after missing the 2018 team we expect Benzema to have a mission. Goals a plenty is very possible. One uncertainty with Benzema and Mbappe for that matter is Griezmann. His place is not cemented on the 2022 team, but his 42 goals are third most all time for France. If Griezmann secures playing time, that could affect both of the other Frenchmen from obtaining the Golden Boot.
