New York City is coming off a 2-0 shutout victory vs. the host Chicago Fire on Aug. 21. Santiago Rodriguez paced New York City with a goal and an assist. Gabriel Pereira scored the other goal for New York City. New York City goalie Sean Johnson tallied his MLS-best 13th shutout of the season despite not recording an official save.
The victory snapped a three-match losing streak that included allowing at least three goals apiece.
Rodriguez earned a yellow card in the 72nd minute and will miss the contest vs. Orlando City because of card accumulation.
Pereira converted the first goal against outstretched Chicago goalie Gabriel Slonina on an assist from Rodriguez in the 16th minute. After Pereira took the ball away from Rafael Czichos around the top of the box, Rodriguez found the net in the 46th minute.
Orlando City most recently edged host Charlotte FC 2-1 on Aug. 21. Orlando City moved above the playoff line with the narrow victory. Tesho Akindele scored the deciding goal in the 89th minute on a breakaway pass from Junior de Almeida. It was Akindele’s first goal of the season.
Orlando City’s Ercan Kara began the scoring with a goal in the 62nd minute. Kara was assisted by Facundo Torres. Charlotte responded by tying the match four minutes later with a header goal by McKinze Gaines. Kamil Jozwiak used a floating cross to connect with Gaines for the goal.
Orlando City is now on a two-match winning streak after dropping two in a row.
