The Astros will send 25-year-old right-hander Cristian Javier to the bump in the series opener. Javier has a respectable 3.22 ERA in 11 games this season (seven starts). However, when it goes badly for Javier, it goes badly for Javier. In nine of his 11 appearances, he has allowed two runs or fewer. But in the other two, he allowed seven and five earned runs, respectively, both times pitching just 3.2 innings. One of those was his last time out, a loss against the Mariners on June 6.

Javier generally doesn’t pitch deeply into the game, completing six innings only one time. He’s a strikeout machine, though, recording 56 punch outs in his 44.2 innings. He has faced Texas twice this season and has generally handled the Rangers’ lineup well. In two starts, he has allowed three earned runs in 11 innings of work, and his most recent against Texas was the lone start in which he completed six innings. He struck out nine Rangers in that contest but took the loss as the Astros were blanked by the Rangers.

Opposing Javier is 27-year-old left-hander Taylor Hearn. Hearn is 4-4 in 11 starts with a 5.40 ERA in 50 innings pitched. He’s had trouble keeping runners off the basepaths, allowing 58 hits and 25 walks (1.66 WHIP). Home runs have been an issue, as well, having allowed seven round-trippers in his 11 starts. He’s faced the Astros twice this season, losing both starts. He’s given up eight earned runs in just 9.2 innings of work.
