ONTARIO BETTING LAWS
Sports betting legislation in Ontario is fast moving, and Ontario is at the forefront of implementing Canada's new sports betting law province-wide. Now that Bill C-218 has legalized single-game sports betting as of Aug. 27, 2021, the province has moved forward with issuing commercial betting licenses to the above providers.
Ontario alone is set to be one of the largest markets in North America since officials from the AGCO are eager to offer as many licenses as possible.
The online sports betting market in the province is overseen by the iGaming Ontario commission, a subsidiary of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO). The newly-minted commission has established and published the full requirements for operators to enter the Ontario market, with license applications pending already. Important details about the AGCO's sports betting licenses include the following:
- There is no limit to the amount of licenses available in the province.
- There is no license requirement; even offshore operators are eligible to apply for an online wagering license in Ontario.
- The law does not provide for international liquidity; as a result, games that pool prize money from other countries or provinces (like poker or certain DFS platforms) are unavailable.
- Similar to Europe, Ontario's sports betting packages heavily restrict advertisements, and require stringent compliance measures to keep their games fair and responsible. As a result, promotional information on these platforms and their offers is scarce.
The AGCO has already made licenses fully available to any interested parties, including offshore sportsbooks. These licenses are live as of April 4th, 2022, and allow for sports betting as well as online casinos and event wagering. SpinGenie Casino Ontario has already entered the fray. Expect to see a tidal wave of betting options for eligible, legal bettors in Ontario continue to roll! You are able to bet on awards shows, political events, esports, and more.
AGCO CALLS FOR OPERATIONS HALT ON APRIL 4, 2022
In recent news, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has announced an important rule for the launch of the commercial sports betting market in the province: all operators that are applying for the expanded commercial license must cease operations or else jeopardize their ability to offer legal betting in Canada.
Essentially, this means that the market has experienced a reset: operators offering betting that have secured an iGaming license in Ontario (including PointsBet, theScore Bet, 888, and BetRivers) have shut down their existing sportsbooks and "re-launched" with their competitive platforms. This is to ensure that regulators can stay on top of any unregulated sportsbooks and likely shut down unlicensed platforms as the market re-launches with single event wagering.
