Where Do Super Bowl MVPs Come From?
Super Bowl LVIII is set as Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers will take on Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs for the right to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. Through the first 57 Super Bowls 48 different players have been named the game’s Most Valuable Player and next Sunday somebody will add (or re-add) their name to that list. We take a look at where those 48 athletes come from, finding out which hometowns, high schools, and colleges have produced the most MVPs. Hometowns are defined as the player's place of birth.
Check out this map to see where each Super Bowl MVP was born.

Where do Super Bowl MVPs come from?
We start by taking a look at which states have produced the most Super Bowl MVPs. Coming in at #1 in terms of both individual MVP winners and the total number of wins by the players is California. The Golden State boasts 8 individual winners and 12 total wins. 7 of those winners were awarded the Pete Rozelle Trophy just one time, while the other 5 wins came via a guy named Tom Brady. Florida has the second most winners with 6, each having won once giving the state 6 total wins as well.
Super Bowl MVPs represent 17 different states as well as two provinces outside the United States. Hines Ward (Seoul, South Korea) and Mark Rypien (Alberta, Canada) are the only two players to be born internationally and win the award. Both attended high school and college in the United States, however.
While a number of states have produced multiple winners, the list of cities that can boast the same accolade is smaller. Only three cities have produced multiple winners, each producing two. Those cities are San Diego (Marcus Allen and Terrell Davis), New Orleans (Peyton and Eli Manning), and Dallas (Harvey Martin and Drew Brees).
Fans across the country can bet on their hometown heroes to be the next MVP and can use our BetMGM Bonus Code to get the best offers.
Where do Super Bowl MVPs go to school?
The University of Southern California (USC) has produced the most individual Super Bowl MVPs of any college, counting 3 winners as alumni. Those three are Lynn Swann, Marcus Allen, and Malcolm Smith. 7 other colleges have produced multiple winners as well, each producing two. Michigan boasts the most total MVP wins by alumni with 6. One of those is from former Heisman winner Desmond Howard (one of just 4 players to win both awards), while the other 5 come courtesy of Tom Brady.
Only 4 former junior college athletes have won the award. They are Aaron Rodgers (Butte), Julian Edelman (San Mateo), Larry Brown (Los Angeles Southwest), and Deion Branch (Jones County).
Only 4 high schools have produced multiple Super Bowl MVPs.
Methodology
All data regarding Super Bowl MVP winners as well as their college, high school, and hometown were obtained via Wikipedia. “Hometown” refers to the athlete’s place of birth for the purposes of this data.
