UFC 302 took place on Saturday June 1, 2024 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey and the judges put in overtime.
In the main event, Islam Makhachev retained his UFC Lightweight title in a hard-fought battle against Dustin Poirier. Makhachev showed his dominance early and often but Poirier never quit and wound up bloodying up the champion. Still, talent prevailed as Makhachev earned a submission midway through the fifth and final round.
In the co-main event, Sean Strickland captured a split decision victory over Paulo Costa and that was the theme of UFC 302. Bettors saw nine decisions in total, six unanimous and three split.
Of the three fights that finished inside distance, two of them ended in the first round and they were all submissions. The victors in those fights were veteran middleweight Kevin Holland and Brazilian heavyweight contender Jailton Almeida.
Bookmakers were certainly happy with the lack of knockouts but favorites ruled the night, going 10-2 on the 12-fight card.
