I Got A Fever ...

... And, to borrow from the great Saturday Night Live skit, the only prescription is more betting on the WNBA. That was the case throughout the 2024 regular season, with Indiana Fever newcomer Caitlin Clark the catalyst.

Clark not only put fans in seats, but bets on apps. And a lot of those wagers were from women. BetMGM trader Hannah Luther noted that twice as many women bet on the WNBA in 2024 than in 2023.

"BetMGM experienced historic interest in the WNBA during the 2024 regular season, with a 108% increase in betting year-over-year," Luther said in a Thursday news release. "Caitlin Clark establishing herself as a star player, and veterans like Breanna Stewart and A'ja Wilson continuing to dominate, fueled the impressive growth."

Clark averaged 19.2 points per game this season, seventh in the league. The lead-pipe-cinch WNBA Rookie of the Year also had a league-high 337 assists, averaging 8.4 per game.

Indiana finished the regular season 20-20, including a 9-2 run from July 12-Sept. 4 that turned around its season. The Fever, who lost their first five games and were 1-8 through nine games, made the WNBA playoffs as the No. 6 seed among eight teams..

Wilson, the Las Vegas Aces star center, scored a league-record 1,021 points, the first WNBA player to crack 1,000 points in a season. She averaged 26.9 points (first) and 11.9 rebounds (second), and she also led the WNBA with 2.6 blocks per game.

Stewart, the New York Liberty standout forward, averaged 20.4 points (fourth) and 7.9 assists (second). The Liberty finished a league-best 32-8 in the regular season.

Give Clark Her Props

While WNBA betting was up around the league, it was way up for Clark's Indiana Fever. At BetMGM, six of the top eight most-bet games involved Indiana.

Further, Clark player props were the most-bet of any player in the league. In fact, BetMGM saw five times more bets on Clark than on the second-most-bet player, fellow rookie and rising Chicago Sky star Angel Reese.

"Consistent interest in Clark props and Fever moneylines, and a significant number of bets on the Fever outright [championship], make Clark's influence on the league undeniable," Luther said. "We expect these trends to carry over into the postseason, which is shaping up to be highly competitive and exciting."

Speaking of the postseason, perhaps no surprise: Indiana is lapping the field at BetMGM in WNBA championship action, taking 47% of all tickets and 62% of all money. That's almost four times more tickets and money than New York, which is No. 2 in both categories.

But keep in mind that the Fever are the +3000 fifth choice in WNBA Finals odds, and the top four teams are all +800 or shorter:

  • New York Liberty +120
  • Las Vegas Aces +225
  • Minnesota Lynx +240
  • Connecticut Sun +800
