Betting on the USC Trojans
As one of the most popular West Coast college sports programs, betting on USC Trojans’ basketball is a major draw. This is also one of the oldest college basketball teams in the nation with an extended playing history.
Basketball at Southern California University dates all the way back to 1906. Before the formation of individual conferences, the Trojans played as an Independent until 1921.
The first conference affiliation was with the Pacific Coast Conference. There was a brief tenure in the Athletic Association of Western Universities from 1959 through the 1967-1968 season. USC then moved to the original Pac-8 Conference which would later expand into the modern-day Pac-12 in 2011.
Over all those years, 1954 still holds a prominent place in the school’s athletic history. The basketball team made the first of two appearances in the annual NCAA Tournament’s Final Four. Including that deep run, the Trojans have qualified for this national tournament a total of 19 times.
Head coach Forest Twogood led USC back to the Final Four in 1961. The deepest tournament run since that point included a pair of trips to the Elite 8 in 2001 under head coach Henry Bibby and in 2021 with Andy Enfield at the helm.
As far as conference play, USC has claimed seven regular-season titles with one conference tournament title.
Playing in Southern California, the biggest rivalry over all that time remains the UCLA Bruins. While USC basketball has remained in the shadow of UCLA as far overall accolades, the Trojans traditionally play the Bruins tough year after year.
This has formed a national betting interest in these annual showdowns. Since UCLA is often set as the favorite on the point spread, USC becomes a popular underdog wager.
If you are betting on the Trojans in a legal state, you're in luck and there are plenty of options when placing your bets. A common strategy when betting on basketball is wagering on the spread. A spread looks similar to this:
- USC Trojans -4.5
- UCLA +4.5
A bettor wagering on the Trojans -4.5 needs them to win the game by 5 points or more to win their bet. On the other side, a bettor who wagered on the UCLA Bruins +4.5 can have the team lose by 4 points or less, and even win the game to collect their winnings.
Betting on the USC Trojans in California
Given the state’s massive population, California has the potential to be one of the biggest sports betting markets in the country. However, current state law prohibits sports betting in any form. Since there is a network of tribal casinos in place, that would be a natural starting point for any legalization efforts.
The tide could turn in 2022 with a sports betting voter referendum planned for November’s general election. Legally betting on USC Trojans’ basketball would be a natural draw for potential California sports bettors.
Online sports betting remains illegal in California
