Race Tightens

LATEST UPDATE: The Los Angeles Dodgers are still atop World Series futures odds at BetMGM. But L.A. has slid out since the end of July, when they were solid +250 chalk.

In mid-September, the Dodgers are the +475 favorite, narrowly ahead of the surging Philadelphia Phillies (+500). Furthermore, there are now nine teams at +1500 or shorter, six of those at +900 or shorter.

It's a packed house, to put it lightly.

"I think the assumption going into the year was the Dodgers were going to dominate throughout, and they'd be a clear favorite once we head into the postseason," BetMGM trader Hal Egeland said. "They're still favorites for a reason. But the rest of the league has certainly closed the gap.

"Every team in the hunt has its flaws, and I think we're positioned to have a very competitive postseason. I can't recall this many teams in contention at this stage."

Trending Teams

LATEST UPDATE: Egeland noted two teams that bettors are looking at of late. And it just so happens those two teams have the first- and second-best records in all of MLB.

"Over the past couple of weeks, bettors have taken interest in the Brewers and Phillies," Egeland said. "The Brewers have the best record in baseball, and sitting at +650 looks enticing.

"And the way the Phillies dismantled the Mets and ran away with the NL East definitely factored into the increase in action on Philly."

Milwaukee is 90-58 and has already clinched a playoff berth. Through games of Sept. 13, no other team has officially clinched a berth. But Philadelphia (89-60) certainly will in short order, sitting 13 games ahead of New York in the NL East.

Last October, Philly opened as the +1100 co-fourth choice in BetMGM's World Series odds. On Sept. 10, the Phillies were the +750 co-second choice with the Brewers. Now, the Phillies are solo second at +500, riding a six-game win streak as part of a 13-3 overall surge.

"Having said that, the Phillies remain a winner for us at the moment. That could change should they keep this up," Egeland said. "But I don't think they're going to be a huge concern as the regular season ends. Once the playoffs start, that could change pretty quickly.

"The Dodgers are just about break-even at the moment. They still take a decent amount of handle. But action has cooled off a bit, as they've failed to really run away with the NL West."

Indeed. L.A. (82-65) is only 2.5 games up on the San Diego Padres (80-68), who are the +1500 co-eighth choice, along with the Chicago Cubs.

Needs and Liabilities

LATEST UPDATE: With a handful of games left in the season, the Dodgers are slightly ahead of the Phillies and Detroit Tigers (+900) in ticket count for World Series odds. The New York Mets (+2800) and New York Yankees (+800) round out the top five in tickets.

L.A. is more dominant in money, taking almost twice as much as No. 2 Milwaukee. The Phillies, Padres and Tigers are Nos. 3-5 in money.

"I can't believe I'm saying this, but BetMGM is cheering for the Yankees.  They'd actually be our best result among teams with a realistic spot in the playoffs," Egeland said. "I know there's a lot of pessimism among Yankee fans. But it's still surprising to me to see such a public team in good standing for our futures book.

"The Mets would be good for BetMGM, as well. But if you've watched any Mets baseball recently, that comes to no surprise."

Indeed, the Mets are 76-73 and on an eight-game losing streak. Still, New York is tied for third in the bid for the three NL Wild Card slots.

So who is BetMGM rooting against?

"We'll be cheering hard against the Giants making a push toward that Wild Card spot," Egeland said. "They're our worst result among teams with a shot, and at 50/1, I don't blame anyone for taking a shot, with how they've looked recently."

San Francisco is tied with the Mets for the third and final NL Wild Card slot. The Giants are on a timely 14-4 spree.

"The Brewers wouldn't be a great result for us either. They fit the mold of a team that can build up liability quickly. A team with relatively low expectations that rockets up the standings leads to bettors getting some favorable pricing."

Indeed, the Brew Crew opened +3500 last October and could still be had at +2500 on July 21.

Flying Under the Radar

LATEST UPDATE: Egeland pointed to a division he thinks has the ability to see a sleeper team make a deep playoff run.

"I'd probably go with whoever makes it out of the AL West, assuming two teams make it," Egeland said. "I've been a believer of the Mariners all year. And even though the Astros' roster looks a lot different than in years past, Houston is a smart organization. And that's a pretty good roster down in Houston.

"The Rangers were a popular pick in the offseason and may have ruined their chances with the early season struggles. But the AL should be careful with this team, should it sneak in. They're playing great baseball right now."

Through Sept. 13, Houston (81-68) is a half-game ahead of Seattle (80-68) in the AL West, with Texas (79-70) just two games back. In the AL Wild Card race, the Mariners are third at the moment, followed by the Rangers.

Seattle is the +1100 seventh choice in World Series futures odds. Houston is +2000and Texas +3000.

World Series Odds

The MLB World Series takes place in late October and is often referred to as the Fall Classic. World Series futures odds for each season are made shortly after the conclusion of the previous season, and sometimes even sooner.

Since the MLB regular season is the longest of the four major sports, bookmakers don’t make one team a decisive favorite over another prior to the season. You’ll usually see three to four teams have World Series Odds of +1000 or less.

The majority of the MLB teams will have future odds ranging from +1000 to +7000 or so. Then you start to get into longer shots, with some teams at +20000 (200/1) or more.

How Do I Bet On The World Series?

It’s very simple to bet on the World Series, since the MLB futures odds market is always open for business. To figure out your Win Amount, a bettor would take the betting odds offered on a team and multiply by the amount wagered.

For example: The Yankees are +700 (7/1) to win the World Series. A $100 wager would profit $700, for a total payout of $800.
