Betting on the Philadelphia Phillies
Professional baseball and Philadelphia have enjoyed a long-standing love affair when it comes to the Phillies. As two-time MLB Champions, the team’s large fan base in the city also loves to bet on the games.
Philadelphia Phillies Overview
As one of the longest-tenured MLB franchises, the origin of the Philadelphia Phillies dates back to 1883. First known as the Quakers, the team changed its name to the Phillies in 1890.
The early years of this team are highlighted by a trip to the 1915 MLB World Series. The Phillies went on to lose to the Boston Red Sox in five games as part of a best-of-seven series.
Philadelphia’s next trip to the Fall Classic was in 1950 with pitcher Robin Roberts leading the way. The end result did not go as planned in a 4-0 series sweep at the hands of the New York Yankees.
Following an extended dry spell, everything finally came together in 1980 with Dallas Green as the Phillies’ manager. Behind Steve Carlton as the ace of the pitching staff, Philadelphia won its first World Series title with a 4-2 series win against the Kansas City Royals.
Three years later, the Phillies won the NL East at 90-72 and made a postseason run to the 1983 World Series. This time around, they were on the wrong end of a 4-1 series loss to the Baltimore Orioles.
With another World Series loss in 1993, the Phillies were able to win their second MLB world title in 2008. With Charlie Manuel as the team’s skipper, Philadelphia made short work of the Tampa Bay Rays in five games. The Phillies qualified for the World Series again in 2009 but lost to the Yankees four games to two.
Philadelphia’s biggest rivals in the NL East would be the New York Mets and Washington Nationals because of their close proximity. A cross-state rivalry also exists against the NL Central’s Pittsburgh Pirates.
Betting Philadelphia baseball games attracts the most attention when the team is listed as a home favorite on the MLB money line. For example, the Phillies’ money line odds may be listed at -145 against the Mets as +125 road underdogs.
If the Phillies go on to win that game at Citizens Bank Park, the $145 wager would pay $100.
