Betting on the Pittsburgh Pirates
Since registering three straight playoff appearances in the mid-2010s, the Pirates have provided little hope of winning to its fans. Bettors likely have shared that sentiment and taken to the window to bet against Pittsburgh, rather than on it.
Pittsburgh Pirates Franchise History
The Pittsburgh Alleghenys, named after one of three rivers that converge just outside what is now PNC Park, brought professional baseball to Pittsburgh in 1882.
After just under a decade, the team name was changed to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates found sporadic success after the turn of the century, winning World Series titles in 1909 and 1925. It wouldn’t claim another championship until 1960, with Dick Groat and Roberto Clemente at the helm.
Clemente, one of the city’s most famous athletes regardless of sport, remained the face of the Pirates for another decade-plus. Stars like Clemente, Willie Stargell, and Dave Parker made the Pirates one of the most successful franchises in the 1970s.
Due to their explosive offense, the team earned the nickname “The Lumber Company.” Pittsburgh began the decade with a World Series victory in ’71 and capped it off with another in ’79.
Since that historic run in the 1970s, success has eluded the Pirates for the most part. Aside from three consecutive NLCS appearances to begin the ‘90s, and three consecutive playoff appearances in the mid-2010s, the Pirates have not participated in October baseball.
Pittsburgh fans had the pleasure of watching all-time-great Barry Bonds during their ‘90s run and MVP Andrew McCutchen in the 2010s, but neither superstar could lead the Pirates back to the Promised Land.
Young phenom Paul Skenes has Pirates fans reinvigorated, and we expect more fans to bet on them in the MLB season.
