The Lions Den

Last season, the Detroit Lions came oh so close to reaching the Super Bowl. The Lions held a 24-7 halftime lead, but couldn't make it stand up in a 34-31 loss.

But Detroit didn't let that setback deter it this season. Now, the Lions are 9-1 SU and are the +325 favorite in BetMGM's Super Bowl odds.

A week ago, Detroit was the +450 second choice, behind +400 fave Kansas City. But the Lions then went out and plastered Jacksonville 52-6, while the Chiefs (9-1 SU) suffered their first loss of the season, 30-21 at Buffalo.

That led BetMGM's risk room to move Detroit above K.C. Well, that and a ton of Lions action all year long, for a team that opened as the +1200 fourth choice.

"It's all one-way traffic on the Lions and has been since we opened in February," BetMGM senior trader Tristan Davis said. "The Lions are clearly the best team in football, and the book reflects that. I'm with the bettors. I can't find any reason to bet anyone else."

The Lions are No. 1 in tickets and money in BetMGM's Super Bowl futures odds.

Kansas City won its first nine games this season and was on a 15-0 SU run dating to last season's Super Bowl run. That had the Chiefs atop Super Bowl 59 odds much of this season, until the loss at Buffalo.

K.C. is now the +450 second choice at BetMGM and is No. 2 in tickets and money.

"The Chiefs were popular, but tickets have slowed throughout the season," Davis said.

San Francisco Beat

The San Francisco 49ers opened last February as the +500 favorite in BetMGM's odds to win Super Bowl 59. But the Niners were ravaged by injuries over the first several weeks of the season.

San Fran is starting to get healthier, but still can't get on track, sitting at 5-5 SU heading into a huge Week 12 matchup at Green Bay.

It took until this week for oddsmakers to really knock the Niners down. After a 20-17 home loss to Seattle, San Fran fell from the +900 fifth choice to the +2000 co-seventh choice.

San Francisco is falling out of favor not just for its middling record, but because the public can't get enough of Detroit.

"No other team is really getting much interest. All I see are Lions bets," Davis said.

Trending Teams ... Or Not

The Washington Commanders aren't taking much action in BetMGM's Super Bowl odds. But their price continues to surge in the right direction, behind rookie QB Jayden Daniels. And that's even after a two-game skid that has Washington at 7-4 SU.

When Super Bowl 59 odds first went up, in February, the Commanders were a distant +15000 (150/1). After Week 9, Washington reached its peak of +2200. The two losses sent Daniels & Co. out to +4000.

But only a handful of bettors are intrigued. Washington is 14th in ticket count and even further down in money.

"For teams who are longer than 30/1, the Commanders are really the only team that got steam," Davis said.

As noted above, the Lions and Chiefs are Nos. 1-2, respectively, in tickets and money. The Baltimore Ravens (7-4 SU) are No. 3 in tickets and money, and they're No. 4 on the Super Bowl odds board at +800.

San Francisco is No. 4 in tickets and money, followed closely by Buffalo (9-2 SU. The Bills are now the +650 third choice in odds to win Super Bowl 59.

So who is BetMGM rooting for, and perhaps more importantly against, in Super Bowl 59 odds?

"We don't want the Chiefs or the Lions," Davis said. "At this stage, with teams that have a chance, Houston, Philly and Buffalo would be our best."

The Texans (7-4 SU) are the +2200 ninth, after opening +2500 and getting as short as +1500. Philadelphia (8-2 SU) is on a six-game win streak, climbing to the +850 fifth choice in the process.
